Used cooking oil (in plastic jugs), appliances, tires (Opelika residents only), appliances, yard waste are also accepted. Cardboard is to be broken down and put in the compactors. Please don’t put cardboard in while they are running, wait till the cycle is complete to add to it. Electronics (laptops, monitors, tv’s, smart phones, gaming systems) are no longer accepted, please dispose of these items in your yard waste. Glass and batteries are not accepted at either drop-off location.

Students in Opelika City Schools are encouraged to participate in recycling at school and at home. All classrooms are given the opportunity to have a desk side bin to collect recycling.

The city often has contamination with the recycling which causes the entire load to go to trash and not be recycled. The Solid Waste Association of North America released a great video showing the most common issues with contamination.

To get a better understanding of why the recycled material must be loose, please check out the Columbus Recycling Center and Sustainability Center video.
