Opelika, Alabama (March 11, 2013) –The East Alabama Recycling Partnership (EARP) will host an electronics recycling and document shredding event Saturday, March 23rd, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Auburn University near 543 West Magnolia Avenue in Auburn, AL. The event site is located near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and South Donahue Drive in the large parking lot across the street from Mama Goldberg's restaurant (click here to view site). Citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate in the countywide event. There is no charge for used electronics brought to be recycled. There will also be on-site shredding for secure paper disposal. There is a 3 box limit per vehicle. EARP will also accept donations of canned goods or cash donations for the East Alabama Food Bank. Opelika, Alabama (February 12, 2013) – On Saturday, March 2nd volunteers of Keep Opelika Beautiful will be participating in the Citywide Cleanup. This local effort, an extension of the national program, Great American Cleanup, is an opportunity for citizens to join together in the fight against litter. Dr. Bob Patton has again agreed to chair the local event. Over 300 volunteers joined Keep Opelika Beautiful in 2012 to participate in the event.

Established by Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the nation's premier litter prevention and education organization, in partnership with state and local affiliates such as ours, the Great American Cleanup is our country's largest annual cleanup, beautification and community improvement program. Each year, millions of volunteers in over 15,000 communities across the country take part in this program.

Opelika, Alabama (February 7, 2013) – On Saturday, February 23, Keep Opelika Beautiful and Opelika Tree Commission will host an Arbor Day Celebration at 9:00am at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center. The event will be a time for residents to learn about trees.
During the event, Keep Opelika Beautiful will be planting seeds with the children and teaching about tending to the seed's growth. The Opelika Tree Commission will have a tree planting demonstration with City Horticulturist, Tommy Beasley. The winners of the Arbor Day poster contest will be announced and prizes given. The Opelika Tree Commission will also be giving away dogwood seedling to all Arbor Day Celebration attendees.

Opelika, Alabama (February 19, 2013) – Keep Opelika Beautiful is planning the 2013 Garden in the Park for Saturday, April 6. The event will take place at the Opelika Municipal Park from 8am to 3pm. Garden in the Park is an arts and craft style fundraiser benefiting Keep Opelika Beautiful.

Garden in the Park was started in 2006 as a fundraiser for renovations to the red caboose in downtown Opelika. Since this time, Keep Opelika Beautiful has completed all renovations for this community structure. Funds raised from Garden in the Park have continued to support various projects coordinated by Keep Opelika Beautiful.

The arts and crafts festival will feature all handmade or natural items for sale. Food, children activities and entertainment will also be included in the family-friendly event. There is no charge for admissions into Garden in the Park. Food donations will be collected for the East Alabama Food Bank.

Sponsors of the 2013 Garden in the Park are Opelika-Auburn News, Rabren General Contractors, Four Seasons Federal Credit Union, Quantum Communications, EarthFare and members of the Opelika City Council.

Applications for arts and craft vendors and food vendors are currently being accepted.

 On Saturday, December 29 Keep Opelika Beautiful and Opelika Tree Commission will host a Christmas Tree Recycling Event. The event will take place at the Opelika Chamber of Commerce parking lot from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to assist in removing the trees from residents' vehicles. In exchange for trees, Opelika Tree Commission will be giving away dogwood tree seedlings. Christmas trees collected will be ground and the mulch used throughout the City of Opelika.
